Apple Phone?

Engadget posted a rumor yesterday regarding an Apple branded phone that may come to Cingular soon. Here's the link: http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/31/a pples-mobile-me-to-be-an-mvno/ Anyone heard any rumors about this?

Isn't the latest rumor that they're upgrading to a 3G-only network?

Moto showed both GSM and CDMA versions of the Q recently. They showed a GSM version at MOTONOW, and then CDMA versions later. It will be available in both flavors.

Any idea when that phone will drop, Boss? Will it hit before Moto Q?

Hmmm.... I've avoided the Treo stuff because I could never hear my buddy when he called me from his. I don't know if it was hardware or software (or his carrier), but I just never trusted the Treo devices. I guess I can try it out and return it if I hate it. Verizon lets you do that, right? Q-Tip with bluetooth. LOL...

Just wondering. I'm looking to get a pdaphone by the end of the year. Has anyone heard more on these upcoming devices? I'm really holding out for a phone with WinMobile 5.0.

At least, that's what they say here: http://davesipaq.com/news/rokr_cripp led_100_apple.html Terrible news if true. Why buy this for $250 when I can get a REAL iPod for a few bucks more that has no limits? Shame on you, Apple....

But that defeats the whole purpose of this phone; to download songs directly via the iTunes Music Store. I'm not saying that the way you do it is wrong (that's exactly what I do, buy a CD and rip it to iTunes), but you aren't the target customer for this phone. They want customers that are willing to shell $.99 per download on a daily basis. There's plenty of phones that can play music. Why would you want this one ...

You're absolutely right, Disturbed. The iPod (and this phone) are not the weapon of choice for audiophiles, but I can still dream of having pristine audio everywhere I go  I already use Apple Lossless, so I'm with you there. I've got a set of HK Soundsticks on my desk. It connects via USB. I wonder if you can output the audio from this phone through USB 2.0? That might appease me...

bjs said: I think you'd better check it in the store and listen its speakerphone. It is the best candybar phone for me so far. You're kidding, right? Even if it's the best-sounding phone in the world, that 1/8 headphone jack is going to sound like dirt when plugged into a high-fi system like a $10,000 Lexicon MC-12. My problem with this phone is the same problem I have with iPods in general. There's no way to get a discrete digital ...

Yes, you can use MP3, but that's not the format Apple delivers your song via download in. You're stuck with the format that they sell, which is AAC, right? Will the DRM protection allow me to shuffle purchased songs from this phone to a PC? I guess maybe it's possible seeing it's got USB 2.0, but that would make it quite a bit different than what Apple allows with a standard iPod. And as for RCA jacks and car usage, I'll ...

Missed that detail. My mistake, but that doesn't discredit my other point about limitations of usage due to copy protection and crappy audio outputs.

And thanks to the copy protection schemes that the iTunes Music Store uses, you can never get the songs OFF the phone. If you download from your computer, you can bring it to your iPod, but songs CAN'T be copied off iPods (legally). I'm sure this phone has the same limitation. So why would I buy a song to listen on just one device? Wouldn't I want to buy my music so that I can listen to it anywhere? ...

I agree! Capped at 100 songs? $250? For fifty dollars more I can buy a REAL iPod with 30GB of storage that will store 7500 songs. Not a good deal. C'mon Apple. The only reason that you capped it at 100 songs is because you don't want it to cut into the iPod Nano sales. If you don't make advances on your own product line, one of your competitors will...

Have you looked at the new Samsung i730? It's out now. It's a cool phone, but you'll likely get sticker shock when you see how much the thing costs!

Well, as a previous Cingular customer that couldn't make a call within a 5 mile radius around my home (and only living 20 minutes from Boston), I decided to switch to a carrier that can actually connect my calls. I tried T-mobile too. Neither carrier could compare (in my area) to Verizon.

According to that link I provided at phonearena, the i830 will have: "Samsung SCH-i830 is a dual-band CDMA plus dual-band GSM PDA phone. It features color touchscreen display, Bluetooth, QWERTY sliding keyboard, Microsoft Mobile for Pocket PC Phone Edition 2003, SD memory expansion slot and built-in Speakerphone."

Oh yeah, the speakerphone is useless. It sounds like you're talking to someone with two empty soupcans connected with a piece of string. If you plan to use the speakerphone while you drive, you WON'T be able to hear it over engine noise. The camera is a disappointment when compared to my last phone (Sony Ericsson T300). I guess the only thing I can say is good about this phone is the voice dialing, which is a feature just about ...

I've got an Audiovox 8900. Avoid it if you can. When I plug it into the car charger, I have to turn the phone off, then on, then off, then on again before I can make calls and charge at the same time. It's a POS. The signal seems fine. I get 5 bars everywhere I go, but I attribute that to Verizon, not this damn phone.

Samsung phones (actually, any phone running Windows Mobile OS) is not supported by iSync. You'd have to get a 3rd party app that will make it iSync-compatible. Try: http://www.markspace.com Also, if you need to sync to Microsoft Entourage, you'd need something like: http://www.e2sync.com

This topic can be debated until we're all cyberized and can have cell conversations telepathically. My experience in Middlesex County, MA is that I started on Verizon, left because of poor phone choices. Tried Cingular, which had terrible reception while driving through the boonies of Route 2. Tried T-Mobile, whose reception was "a little" better, but still was unusable in many places. I'm back on Verizon and have 5 bars everywhere I go. I just have a crappy phone. ...
