happy holidays to all
i pretty much got yesterday off and it the weather in california could not have been more cooperative. i hope all phone scoopers get at least one good day off this holiday season, even if it wasn't christmas day. happy new year to all. (don't get any silly ideas, we're still working between now and new year.)
oh no!
how totally thoughtless of me. i was so consumed with catching these phones on video i totally ignored taking photos of them, i'm sorry xjittianx. i think i took some of the luxury models. i'll double check and if so, add them to the article.
only americans
(or maybe it's only north americans) say no-KEE-ah. finnish, believe it or not, is closely related to japanese; which given americans' penchant for mis-pronouncing japanese words, would explain why everyone here says it different than finns. it really is NOCK-ee-ahh. stress in both languages is usually on the first syllable.
thanks for stickin up for me japhy. we're here to make this a more global place, one person at a time.
we report the results we get
i always thought that light sensor was just an indicator light but it wasn't working since i didn't have the built in mail program checking my mail. it's happened to me on so many windows mobile phones, i just assume it's true now.
however the signal strength and battery reports i'm quoting in there are from over a week's worth of testing. i was shocked at how well the slim battery worked. and i was in pain when i tried ...
Re: Maybe its just where I live...
in wealthier neighborhoods, i have seen plenty of 12 year olds with very expensive phones, but in most places that is simply not the case. do most 12 year olds everywhere want super expensive high end phones that they read about online? heck yah. are most 12 year olds responsible enough to take a little care with those phones? ummm no. i don't feel bad about our recommendations here, but yah. if you live in a wealthy neighborhood, you're ...
testing
one more thing is being updated. but it's so minor that no one should care. still i'm posting here to test it.
i was afraid of that
we got it right in the written review (did ya see that?), but i got it wrong in the video. unfortunately youtube makes it impossible to correct errors like this. ARG. yes, it is 1.3 MP, just like on the SK3.
Re: Dig a little deeper
i dug WAY deep and found it 3 folders down. what a bummer. good thing there's a camera button.
CTIA came late this year
remember, CTIA came so late this year that carriers could really announce any of their holiday hotness. they wanted to tease you back in the beginning of october, not at that end of it. so it's true, there weren't really any jaw dropping phones announced here, but there have already been some, and were told that there will be some more later in the holiday season and then through CES in January.
you're right
we changed it. though i still think the solution is very confusing. wimax (and LTE) both should meet the itu's standards for 4G and use completely different technology than 3G - 3G is CDMA-based while 4G is OFDM based. however neither have been approved by the itu as 4G yet and so are called 3G. and so since the itu approved them as 3G, we have changed our headline to be more accurate. even though we in the press, ...
Re: Wait, isnt WiMAX a 3G technology?
technically it is 3G, because there still is no official 4G, however since it is paired with LTE, which we out here in non-engineer land have been calling 4G but the ITU also calls 3G, then we will call wimax 4G. it only makes sense.
just 1
a 3 megapixel autofocus unit
i feel pretty confident
USCC HAS let their subs do this for some time, but sprint and alltel just recently got with the program (less than a year ago for each, i believe). while GSM carriers have offered this for years. i have switched plans without renewing since ATT was pacbell and only recently after voicestream became tmo. the replies here appear to back me up.
Re: Question about Device info
we have many requests for access to this information, and our looking into ways to provide it to interested parties. if you would like to be on our list to be notified when we have something in place, please send us an email. you can plainly see the administrators' first names - eric or rich @phonescoop.com
wish granted!
the video review is now online so you can compare them!
Re: Can't wait to see this phone in aciton
the headphone adapter, headphones, sync cable and a 1GB are all included in the box.
metalocalypse
for deth!
i'm glad you could appreciate that.
oh man!
you're right. i totally forgot about those. and oddly, when i double checked through our sanyo records, i made those into clamshells in my head since they were so oddly shaped. sorry!
Re: LG VX8350
the reviews and forum for that phone are empty, but i would advise you to keep watching that phone's page or ask in the verizon forum. this forum is just for questions about the site itself.
thanks
i can't believe it's been so long since we did an honest full review of a helio phone.
Re: correction
ugh. thanks! fixed that too.
correction
i want to note that i updated the "customize" section. it was brought to my attention after i published the review that i COULD change HOT to include my own RSS feeds. i have changed this section to reflect how this is done.
Re: TYTN II or Tilt (kaiser)?
there have not been any announcements to this effect, but one can surmise that since this device has the same bands and radios as the ATT 8525, and comes from the same manufacturer, that it would come to ATT as well.
this, of course, is not guaranteed until ATT announces it.
wrong forum
you have been doing phones too long if that was the best scene in the movie for you. so you should know we try to keep our forums on topic. please start this again in the lounge or shop talk if you'd like to discuss it further.
this is not about taxonomy
your suggestions are great if we were trying to come up with a taxonomy that scientist and engineers could agree on. however what we try to do at phone scoop is provide a way for every user, not just scientists, to rate and compare phones. by using the common / colloquial names for various form factors, we allow everyone to make comparisons using terms they already know. these terms are both industry standards as well as what's commonly used ...
Re: Qualcomm?
nextel18 is probably right. qualcomm has acquired flarion and a few other companies to gain control over patents critical to wimax (and also to ANY 4G technology - LTE and UMB included). we'll see if they can actually enforce these patents. if they can, i foresee some anti-monopoly suits coming down the pipe. especially since these are new patents qualcomm acquired, not anything based on CDMA
Re: phones do not equal game controllers
you're right. phones are not game controller. but from what i know about this latest attempt, many of the games will use new control schemes that don't require separate direction and action controls. or if they do, they've taken how the game will be played on the phone into account. at least that's what has been hinted to me for a year or so.
digital chocolate seems to be leading the way in games like this.
i can't say for sure
but this finally sends messages to a phone number (that you have associated with a contact). so i think it might finally be *real* SMS. we'll have to wait until the service launches to know for sure.
we do offer our own in-depth reviews
if you click the "in-depth" link in the left hand sidebar, you'll find our own reviews of most recent phones. while our reviews do point out both positives and negatives about each phone, we tend not to contradict ourselves! ;-)
i dozed off too
i wrote this up too late at night. thanks for the catch, shack
Re: i like it better than...
those aren't fair comparisons since those weren't suretype style keyboards.
i like it better than...
the original flip format of last year's t719
Re: SureType Questions
the t9 on it is pretty advanced. not only does it learn words but it also quickly learns which words you type most often and will offer to complete them for you. for example, the first time we used the Blast, we immediately gave it the phone scoop test. scoop was not even the first word the blast offered up. the next time, we used it, scoop was the first choice. a few days later, the blast was offering ...
not all weapons are good weapons
to further clarify my stance, which rich already did a pretty good job of...
just because the blast is in t-mobile's lineup, or arsenal, doesn't mean it's a great phone or that it's fun to use. i'm not sure what i said there caused you to think that's what i meant. the Blast is pretty decent at messaging, but some of t-mobile's other phones are even better. unfortunately the weak additional features of the blast don't offer users something to ...
Re: front facing camera?
i was in shock regarding the front facing camera too. maybe now that cingular has video sharing they see the front facing camera as a benefit?
also we checked the manual and there's absolutely no reference about what size battery is included. i wish we could confirm it was larger, but we can't (yet)
right-o
t-mobile's 3G is 1700 MHz, so this isn't meant for them. and also, i hope the amp'd post was a joke. amp'd is no more.
Re: Links & Pics
we reviewed the touch here as well:
https://www.phonescoop.com/articles/ htc_touch/
i don't think this is the tilt
the tilt is code-named kaiser and is a GSM / HSDPA device. i don't think this is a CDMA version of that phone. however, i could be wrong since HTC has a habit of giving CDMA and GSM versions of the same phone wildly different code names. but we have no proof to offer one way or the other yet.
ok. enough
selling phones, or managing retail (or running a site about phones) is not a matter of life and death. Phone Scoop does not condone moral judgement here, especially since that is not the topic of this thread.
and i personally would like to point out that it is still common practice for working people to drink at lunch time in every other country outside the US, and it was common practice to do so in the US until the 1980s.
Re: Music player / phone interaction
i didn't spend any time on it because we've shown it on other verizon phones before. when a call comes in, the volume is lowered to play the ringtone, then when you answer, the call is paused, automatically resuming when you hang up. making a call, the music is paused as soon as you press send, and resumed when the call ends.
