Still possible to provision your account for GAIT?
Two years ago cingular made it possible if you had two things: A GSM plan plus a nokia 6340i phone you could get both the ESN & IMEI added and effectively have access to all three technologies...while they last. They call it the GSM plan with the GAIT calling area. It probably shows up on your billing stmt even if you do not use it, should someone not using it see it and go "hey....".

Corp office and CS are arguing over GAIT set-up on acct
I have an issue with being able to access the GAIT calling area on my GSM plan.
My plan shows the "GAIT Calling Area" as an option. I have not been able to access TDMA or AMPS on my 6340i phone, however, and recent storm damage in my area really brought this home. I could not get any GSM signal but an old pre-paid TDMA phone was getting 4/4 bars of strength.

Go back a few years, say to 2002. Someone owning a tri-mode handset had access to Cingular TDMA + AMPS towers, plus those of ATTWS, plus the AMPS roaming on towers of VZW and Sprint and other regional carriers (including some of them who might be tdma). 1. Robotic voice with echo common all over my area, no matter the phone used.

I've seen where it's referred to as the GSM plan with a GAIT calling area. Is it truly still as broad as the old GAIT calling area plan? With all the talk about consolidation and roaming agreement expiration, "I'd think" - famous last words - it might be smaller than you'd otherwise think.

Analog service has to be maintained until February of 2008. Many inside Cingular have said that while tdma will be trimmed back/consolidated as time progresses, the whole-scale shutdown likely would not be until 2008 at the earliest. Whether that hits your area first or last who knows?

Do NOT give your cell phone number out to businesses, colleges, doctor offices, etc. Having worked as an insurance agent, you would be surprised the number of places that sell you out when it comes to private info.
If you can't make it w/o giving your cell number out, make sure you have plenty of rollover mins ;)

Not trying to get too deep into this, but by following threads since last fall, I thought that at one time it was possible to add a tried and true tdma phone to a gait-styled plan but not anylonger. I'm not in the know on that, just have read where other reps have stated that over time.

Well...if you cannot have access to a tdma tower, why in the fall of 04 would Cingular have added the GAIT option to their GSM nation plans? I didn't save the thread, but one guy even posted a picture of his billing screen that showed the option being marked on his plan.

I know that in the fall of '04 Cingular made it possible in most (if not all) areas of the country for you to have GAIT-access, provided you had a GSM Nation Plan & either the 6340i or t62u phones that work on GAIT.

Cingular suffering some tower problems?
I'm in the 63801-63867-63845 zip code region and seem to be experiencing a lot of problems this week with service. Dropped calls, inability to even access a tower, and signal strength that is all over the map even while just watching the display of the phone are the symptoms.
I'm on tdma at present but thinking about going over to gsm in the near future. I've talked with a couple of "gsm" friends and they're also having problems ...

If I have a GSM nation plan to which I've added the GAIT option, tell me if I'm right or wrong about the following...

I just got my bill yesterday and enclosed was an offer for the 7PM option on "select" GSM plans starting at the 29.99 level and up. It said family lines would be charged twice (for the first and second lines) with subsequent lines getting it for free. This is pretty standard with what they've had in the past. Same price as in the past, $7 one line/$14 two lines.

It keeps kicking me out and closing down windows once I actually get to the home page and then try to do anything. Tried the computers at work also and it's doing it there also, so if it's a bug at least it's not just my house.

A few things that are important to me if looking for a carrier/phone...
No matter which company you decide to go with, if you will be doing a lot of car traveling look for a phone that allows you to plug in an external antenna. Look for a rubber covering on the backside of the phone at the base of the phone's own stub antenna and that'll let you know the phone you're holding accepts one.

The following quote came from the Washington Post story about the merger with ATTWS:

Billing nightmares
This problem isn't affecting me, but a lady I work with. She lives in the 63701 zip code - SE Missouri.
She has the Go Phone plan from ATTWS and things have apparently been hunky-dory for a long time (several years). Question about old phones
Are the batteries, wall & car chargers the same for a Nokia 5165 and 6161 model phones?
I have a spare 5165 I was going to give to a buddy whose phone display just bit the dust. My spare 5165 works but needs a battery and doesn't come to the party with any chargers. Will his battery/chargers from the 6161 work with it or are they apples & oranges?

I'm not a rep for any wireless company, but I have been with Cingular for nearly 4 years as a customer. Unless there is wording out there that I'm not aware of, keep in mind that your service under your current contract doesn't truly expire just because you're reaching a one or two year mark of time.
You can keep the plan and phone, as-is, while you're pondering what you should do and whom you should do ...

I'd read in the WSJ a couple of weeks ago that analog has to be "supported" until 2-18-2008 per the FCC rules and regulations, but obviously new phones don't have to have it incorporated and the article never fully explained all the possible ways "supported" could be technically done.

If I end up changing phones and/or carriers, and a phone with analog isn't an option I might consider purchasing a tracfone. I believe they still offer phones that combine digital and analog service. That might not be efficient $$$-wise, but peace of mind sometimes isn't.

I completely understand what you said about a company having to evaluate a change, like the 9PM-->7PM situation, and how it would affect many different areas of the company. If the ATT/Cingular attempt at super-glueing themselves together gains traction, I'd imagine VZW will put a 7PM option on the front burner.

Hey all, just went to check and sign up for GAIT coverage today and it is gone from the Cingular website. If any others out there were planning to make the same jump, looks like we're out of luck :-(

I'm in the 63701 zip code, Lord Gawkerbane. I've read the threads in the phones section, and it seems that people tend to think the 6340i is a kissing cousin to crap.
I guess, however, if you read enough about all phones, you're left with the conclusion they're all pieces of junk that should be dropped over Iraq or something ;-)

Just offering up what I know for this thread...Cingular is headed towards GSM-only, true. I have a TDMA/Analog plan, and I have an aunt with an oooollllldddd analog-only plan/phone that miraculously still works, somehow.
Cingular and all other carriers will "support" the analog standard until approx 2008 (FCC regulations) but aren't required to offer new phones that incorporate it.
Hope that helps some, didn't mean to get in the middle of or create an argument. :D
GAIT plans and Nokia 6340i phone
I wondered if anyone out there happens to live in southern Missouri and subscribes to a GAIT plan from Cingular and also owns the Nokia 6340i? I currently have a Nation-wide TDMA plan along with a Nokia 5160 phone and get pretty good service. I'm just wondering how big a crap shoot it is to consider upgrading to one of the new GSM or GAIT plans & accompanying phones.
