but the phone will trasmit the serial number from the phone over wi-fi. If the serial is registered as stolen, they can then remotely activate the GPS to track the phone. Trust me, we catch a ton of people who think that they have to activate the phone with a service to be caught, but all it takes is a simple wi-fi connection.

you should be just as concerned for a regular cellphone camera or even a disposable camera as well. The only thing this does, as far as I've seen, is take a picture of the front of the card and then read the number off of the picture, and relay that number to the software which runs the card. It just takes away a few steps and makes it so you don't have to manually put in a number to ...

I wanted to post it here because to my knowledge Android gives full disclosure and an opt out option for this, while the news articles are regularly implying that Android records this information with no notice to the user. To my knowledge this is incorrect information in the news articles.

To my knowledge the phone prompts you in any instance where your location data may be stored or updated at least the first time you use an application, and will prompt when you first boot the phone to allow the phone in general to track location.
