Google Maps is very popular. In fact I have that on my 8125, and while it (the 8125) lacks the GPS features of the new Tilt, the software does work very well, and adding an external Bluetooth GPS module works quite well too. As far as which package is "the best", well that's a whole different question. They all have their strengths and weaknesses to some degree. The aforementioned Google Maps was extremely simple to download, install and utilize. ...

While I have not received my Tilt yet (it should arrive Wednesday), I know that the HTC version ships with TomTom Navigation's Taster Edition (very limited). I would imagine that just about any navigation software would be able to take advantage of the integrated GPS if Google Maps and TomTom can. I'll let you know Wednesday. :)

I am no expert, nor do I claim to be, nor do I work for AT&T, but here is my $0.02: Those three phones you mention are considered "SmartPhones", not PDAs (and, yes, many people would be hard pressed to distinguish any difference between the two). To insurance companies, they are two different beasties (so I have been informed by two different homeowners insurance agents, one each from Allstate and State Farm). None of those three above phones have touch ...

Just as the "Hermes" was the "TyTN", the "Kaiser" is the "TyTN II". Names like "Tilt" or "MDA Vario III" are (I believe) additional branded names applied by carriers and/or providers. For example, Cingular/AT&T never refers to the 8125 as the "Wizard" even though that is the platform it's based on. The same "Wizard" platform/device is also re-branded as the T-Mobile "MDA Vario". I am guessing that names like Hermes, and Kaiser are development names and TyTN and TyTN II ...

Sorry...must have had all my poles reversed today. From what was told to me by Cingular and AT&T years ago (out here in California), it was 850 that came first and I guess I never questioned that. As far as the rest goes, I was just adding what I had read around the net along with my own experiences with new technology rollouts (such as EV-DO). Mea Culpa.

My $0.02: Saying? Probably. Happening? Probably not. Past track record indicates it will be at least 6 to 12 months beyond October before UMTS is available in the more general sense. Yes, I believe it will be out in several specific areas of specific cities by October. But everywhere? That would be as likely as there being enough Sony PS3s at launch around the world in November to satisfy demand: Yeah, they'll be able to say they launched, but demand ...

Some agents will allow you to go ahead and connect a MEdiaNet plan instead of a PDAConnect plan. The reality is that they wind up using the same network and same services. The issue was that the MEdiaNet plans are designed for devices that have impossibly low throughput in the first place. This means devices with smaller displays and lower data rates. With the 8125, you have a full-sized PDA display AND high-speed EDGE/EGPRS access. Since people who have this ...

I have indeed. In fact, they have a demo of it on a kiosk in a mall near my home. It's not bad, but it's not very fast. Definitely has a coolness factor of 11 though. By fast I mean that I type 90+ WPM. That keyboard could keep up with me...at least not the version they were demoing. I don't think it was beaten up or anything, but anything is possible--after all it was a mall kiosk. Much as ...

There is a big difference between the Treo and the Wizard, however. The Treo has a square resolution format (240x240) whereas the Wizard is 240x320. That extra resolution makes ALL the difference in the world to some people (myself included). This is the same reason the new HP devices do nothing for me regardless of their other features. Without that extra resolution, the device doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. But like I said, other people ...

For the most part, the 6700 looks like a close relative of the HTC Wizard platform. In fact, I'd be surprised if it wasn't a Wizard. It shares most of the platforms main features: slide out keyboard, Windows Mobile 5.0, dedicated softkey buttons on face and keyboard, etc. I don't work for Verizon or HTC, so I cannot say with 100% certainty that it is a Wizard-based platform, but like I said, it looks that way. Since the 700 is a WM5-based device, then whatever application he is using should be able to work on the Wizard as well--that's the beauty of Windows Mobile 5. In general, if it works on one WM5 device, it should work on another. The same could almost be said for the prior 2003 edition, but editions earlier than that were not quite as cross-compatible. That's one of the main features really addressed with WM5--platform compatibility regardless of hardware. And ...

This is categorically NOT a Service Pack in any way, shape or form. AKU2 refers to a specific flash ROM image file that apparently has "fewer bugs" than many of the flash ROM images currently in use today. HTC (in conjunction with Microsoft, of course) produces a base ROM image that they then provide to the various carriers/providers. Think of this base ROM image as the kind of thing that Microsoft sends out to Dell and HP and other PC ...

Short answer goes: from what I understand and from my own experience, they only charge for MEdiaNet access, not Wi-Fi. Unless Cingular starts offering pay-for-play access points a-la T-Mobile's "Hot Spots", they are only concerned with people's usage of their MEdiaNet network. That's not to say that they COULDN'T monitor your Wi-Fi traffic, just that I doubt that they are. And yes, browsing over Wi-Fi (or doing anything that requires Internet access) is a lot faster than doing so over ...

What you are describing is the Recently Used Applications list. I am not sure how you would turn that off in WM5 (or any PocketPC OS for that matter), but I am pretty sure it's a registry entry somewhere. I've just ignored it and programmed my important applications to the soft keys around the face of the device and just deal with it as such. I'll see if I can find something on the net about disabling that feature.

The design of the belt holder that comes with the Wizard-based devices is good for staying on your belt and holding your device secure, however it does lead to some people having issues with inadvertently hanging up on people while trying to pull the device out. First off, the thumb-keyboard that is integrated into the Wizard is just fine for text messaging and short memos and notes and whatnot. Another thing to try is to see if you can ping the device from your laptop or your desktop. If you cannot ping it, then you're not connected. If you can ping it, then you are connected and you are probably having DNS issues on the device. You might want to try entering the DNS address manually and see if that helps. In fact, for most of the digital cameras and camcorders I've used in the past, the only "zoom" feedback I get is a WT (wide telephoto) scroll bar. When I see something that says 1.0X on a camera display, I pretty much presume that it is referring to the zoom level (since simple digital cameras have a fixed range of zoom levels ...

Generally speaking, if this is not something you are able and comfortable with doing by yourself, it's highly advisable that you not do it at all. And yes, it will void your warranty. First, let me congratulate you on your selection of the 8125. I feel that this is Cingular's best data-device offering to date, and I think you will be very pleased with it over the long haul. Ok, two things. First of all, even though you are "connected", you do not get charged for being "connected". To answer your primary question: WM5 already "is" the refinement thus far, and since it was just released last year (11 months, plus or minus) you can expect it to be at least another 6-9 months before WM5-SE (Second Edition) will even hit the rumor mill. The Messaging and Security Feature Pack will be the next big thing for WM5, but that basically adds Push Email (think Blackberry) and some additional VPN/WAN capabilities. Perhaps this is something that the Cingular 8125 version of the Wizard has that the T-Mobile MDA version does not. I can certainly attest that my Cingular does in fact have a zoom indicator right on the main screen of the camera display and I didn't have to turn it on or do anything special to get it there--it was there by default. One of the nice changes to Windows Mobile 5.0 is that NATIVE WM5 devices have flash memory instead of CMOS memory. What is the difference? Well with older PDAs and Windows-based smart devices (phones, etc.), in order to keep the memory "alive", a small trickle charge from the battery was used. That means even when your older PDA was "off", the battery was still being drained to keep the data in the PDA there. Most of these devices also ...

Most all of the default apps respond to a CTRL-Q as an actual "Quit/Exit" command (as opposed to just clicking the "X button to push it to background).
