Who from SanDisk?
Is there a link to this announcement?
$500?
So, it won't be sold by Verizon, be in their stores and won't be subsidized, so I bet it's going to be um, $450 to $500. Let's see!
Re: I'm starting to think...
Good point, or at least waterproof. I heard a growing number of "normal" phones in Japan are waterproof.
$2 a month would be better
Can't justify $10 a month. $2 would be okay though.
On the web site but not on it
I can see it on the web site, but you click on it and it asks which phone you have and never shows you what it is. Anyone got a direct link?
Looks thicker than 16.5mm - is it?
Anyone managed to measure this to make sure? Looks a bit chunkier than 16.5mm.
3G on 850MHz
I think the key point missing from the summary is that they've started 3G at 850MHz, not just regular GSM. I have 850 3G in my location in WA and it's much stronger than 1900.
Re: When did the term "monoblock" replace "bar?"
I did some digging on Google trends and news and it looks like the term monoblock when it comes to phones is of European origin and started around 2004. It was used to describe Nokia, LG and other bar phones. The term itself is used generically to mean a single forged part. The term had negligible hits on Google from the US until 2006 when it took off, but that may be nothing to do with phones as it's ...
Nice looking phone
I quite like the look of this phone, but the software is a different matter. The browser was probably picked by Nokia, not Verizon based on which sub-vendor could meet the basic spec and offered the lowest royalty.
The Verizon UI is really showing its age and Verizon are in a philosophical hole over it right now. They introduced it to have a consistent UI across their devices, make customer care easier and enable customers to upgrade without having to ...
Crunch time for MediaFLO
I think this is really crunch time for MediaFLO. They haven't exactly taken off in my opinion, and the analog switch off should be the last real blockage to potential success. I still think the average US customer won't pay for mobile TV though, but a bigger coverage foot print might help: More subs might mean lower prices, (it's broadcast after all so adding subs doesn't affect capacity). Of course, if US broadcast TV were worth watching, that would ...
Link
Not too difficult to find but here's a link: http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2007/08/sharp-a nnounces.html
Sharp already did this
Announced about a year ago, scans business cards too.
On the G1 too?
So, is this on the G1 too?

Here's another one, from 2005...

Done already?
Wasn't this done already? I seem to remember reading about it years ago... where could it be? Hmm, oh there it is! https://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=97 4

Re: custom ringers?
You can buy ringers and themes from the catalog, but you still can't set your own MP3 as a ringer.
Re: I don't think sharp made this ...
Yeah, Sharp definitely made it. Remember it's an "entry level" Sidekick. Even so, I don't think it looks bad at all. I just ordered some custom shells too.
Re: USB sync?
Yes, but you have to buy the $9.99 Intellisync add-on available in the "Desktop Interface" a dedicated Sidekick web page. It's a one time fee. It installs on your PC and syncs Calendar, Contacts and ToDo when you push a button. It does it over the air, not over the USB cable.
If you don't want to buy the sync software then you can import contacts etc. using the Desktop Interface but it's less convenient.
Re: 3G: 101
So, apart from 3G, how else is T-Mobile behind? You must have some examples right? And who is it that doesn't take them seriously anymore? And why should they care?
Internation call rates?
Anyone know what the international call rates for this service? One of the big draws of Vonage etc is the low-price or free international calling.
Big surprise (not)
That's a big surprise huh? CTIA are funded to support the cellular industry who are of course scared that such white space spectrum could be used for free by consumers. I hope the FCC is smart and allows white space to be used unlicensed because that create a fantastic new industry that will bring much-needed competition.
FYI: US-only 3G phone
The phone is listed as WCDMA 1700 / WCDMA 2100. This is kind of correct, but not really. :paranoid:
T-Mobile US's 3G network band is Band IV (four) which is spaced out so much that it uses two bands (1700MHz and 2100MHz), but this is not the same as saying it can work on 2100MHz, known as Band I (one) and used in Asia and Europe. This phone only works on 3G in the US.
Re: Sidekick LX as laptop modem
No it doesn't. Apparently originally this was because the Sidekick had a flat-rate data plan (one of the first in the US, if not the first). Now however, I think the flat-rate plan for EDGE on T-Mobile is the same price, so I don't see why that's still an issue, except for the fact that it'd take more development work. Maybe in the future Danger will enable this. /;|
Pricing?
Any idea how much it is?
Re: well...
Actually, Sharp supply iPhone screens, along with other companies. http://www.isuppli.com/news/default.asp?id=81 17
Re: What the buck????
I've seen it. It's awesome. Truly.
Can't this whole DRM thing just go away?
By 2008 I would have hoped this silly DRM thing would have gone away. Buy DRM-free players and boycott ones like this - you know you're paying a fee for that DRM license and all the liabilities Nokia has to insure against right?
Re: T-Mobile HotSpot@Home Data connection
That's very interesting because I'd heard the same as mp820 that it all gets switched over onto WiFi. It'd be interesting to try a few experiments, like go in a sealed room with just a WiFi link (or a T-Mobile dead-spot) and see what happens. Alternatively, run some speed tests on the WAP browser. Also, it'd be interesting to see what happens if you hook the phone up to your laptop and see what kind of speed you get.
It ...
Re: Build their own network?
Qualcomm, or more correctly MediaFLO USA Inc. will operate the MediaFLO network and wholesale the service to AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and anyone else who wants it. The article is making a wrong assumption - AT&T won't need to build out their own network and it certainly won't cost them a billion dollars. 8O Where did that information come?????????
Re: Saw this in the Bellevue store
No, I didn't ask how long that list was. Sorry.
Saw this in the Bellevue store
Went in on Saturday to a store in Bellevue/Factoria right by T-Mobile HQ and they had the Linksys access point sitting there with FREE as the price next to the UMA phone. I picked up the pamphlet and asked the guy about it. He said it was a trial market with only 200 users. He said they were all full up although there was a waiting list I could get on if I was interested. The service is called ...
Something missing
Water's obviously not an energy source. You have to use power to break the water apart into hydrogen, which can then be oxidized back into water. So it's really just a transport mechanism; same goes for hydrogen too. So, this must be a variation on a rechargable battery as far as I can tell. Methanol on the other hand can be found ready made or distilled and then "burnt" in the fuel cell so it's a power source. The ...
Re: video coming
Great video Eric. Good comparison to the II.
RE: SK3
Well, if that's not an indicator of SK3 availability, I don't know what is. :o
Dead in the States, right?
Does anyone seriously TXT in the US? I just use IM on my Sidekick.
Location, location, location
I seriously thought about getting a GSM one of these from Target for my 6 year old. From what I could tell I could stick in a family plan SIM card and have her linked up for $7 a month on T-Mobile (apparently the Firefly isn't SIM locked). But I decided to give it a miss because actually what I really want is a way to find out the location of the phone. Not just so that I ...
Hmm - 2G?
Well, it has the specs that supposedly make a music phone good: real SD Card support, 3.5mm jack, stereo bluetooth and all the buttons. They even threw a QVGA display in there so that the visuals should look good. If it isn't 3G to enable song downloads then I suppose it's just a iPod Nano substitute, right?
Re: Can the RAZR V3x come out now?
Not unles Motorola redesign the radio to operate on 1900MHz (and mybe 850).
Good review
I got a VX8100 3 weeks ago too and I'd say your review is bang on. I got my from the local verizon store and it had a slip of paper in it proudly mentioning that the phone did have an MP3 player in it now. That really threw me because I completely expected it to have one and never for one moment thought it didn't!
Here's my take:
Reasonably nice to hold and handle, although the flip open angle is ...
It's not how big your pipe is, it's what you do with it
So Cingular, Verizon, Sprint and to a certain extent T-Mobile will have fast networks this year. Big deal. Now what are they going to do with them? So far, I ain't seen anything worthwhile on a phone. PC cards make more sense, but the prices are stupid. Streaming TV looks interesting, if the quality is good. Apart from that, it all just looks boring to me.
