850/1900 means compatibility with other GSM carriers in the Americas, but hardly makes this a "world phone".

Now how about some decent Canadian data roaming rates?

1700 MHz markets left out
May 31, 2012, 10:18 AM
in the Article: Cricket to Sell Apple iPhone 4/4S Starting June 22 forum

What I find most interesting about this is that Cricket is offering this only in markets that don't depend on 1700 MHz spectrum, which are quite a few in number. It makes sense given that the hardware doesn't support it, but why spend almost a billion dollars to bring in a single phone that will work only on a portion of its network?

Is anybody else seeing this after the update? At least four of my applications that depend on using GPS to pinpoint my location can no longer get one; the hunt for my location either goes on forever or the application instantly crashes upon querying. :( Only one of my applications, OneBusAway, continues to be location-aware.

Pentaband 3G?
Jan 10, 2012, 3:24 PM
in the Article: Microsoft to Sell Unlocked Nokia Lumia 800 forum

It'd definitely be smart if the unlocked device aimed for the Americas was in fact pentaband 3G, but thus far, the two available variants of the Lumia 800 support only 900/1900/2100 and 850/900/1900/2100 depending on market. Is there actually confirmation that we'll be getting a variant capable of AWS 1700/2100 here?

There is also now a $30/month plan that allows for 100 talk minutes, unlimited text, and unlimited 4G data (throttled above 5 GB/month). For those of us who use our smartphones heavily for data but don't talk so much, this plan is genius.

Stupidest ordinance ever!
Aug 12, 2010, 7:54 PM
in the Article: San Francisco Might Allow Public to Block Ugly Cell Towers forum

I'm about as liberal as you can get and believe that communities have every right to protect themselves, but this is just ridiculous. I think everyone else hit the nail on the head stating how ironic it is that such an ordinance is being considered by the same people who constantly complain (and rightfully so) about crap wireless service. Something else that makes this ordinance stupid to the point of being almost unenforceable is that it's basically saying that towers ...

Finally got our orders to go through on the Apple Store website! It was slow and finicky as hell and I had to do one at a time (we wanted two of them), but I finally got past the "pinwheel of death" on both attempts and forced the process through to the Thank You page with the order numbers. The charges on my card are pending, too, according to my bank's website. The only thing I'm missing now are ...

I finally gave up on the website, the Apple Store app, the Apple Store 800 number (who uses the same website and is having the same difficulty as us in dealing with AT&T), the AT&T Premier Support 866 number (where reps are literally pretending to be recordings and hanging up on people due to call volume), and went down to the local AT&T corp store about twenty minutes ago. Surprisingly, there was no line and I was able to ...

I still haven't been successful in ordering on the Internet or through the app. What's laughable is that after finally getting through to the Apple Store 800 number the same way you'd furiously dial and redial into a radio contest, the rep was dealing with the same technical nonsense as us consumers and couldn't place the order because AT&T's servers won't return upgrade eligibility.

Before the thing finally sent me over the edge and was auctioned off on eBay, I had a netbook with a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU that couldn't manage to view a web page with even a hint of Flash content without freezing everything up for 15-45 seconds at a time. Seeing as most if not all current Android phones support Flash Lite content and Android 2.2 is slated to support Flash in a much more complete way, coupling ...

The data piece is also iDEN, so yes, data connections will be limited to the relatively little bandwidth that iDEN can provide. They're trying to mitigate that by including the Opera Mini browser, which compresses data on the server end before sending it to your phone, and also by including WiFi.

Granted that publicity is at least part of why T-Mobile did this, but can a company not do anything nice anymore without everyone assuming the worst - that it's 100% just a cheap publicity stunt? Would it really be better if they did nothing at all? Microsoft just donated $1,250,000 to the Haiti recovery effort and it was announced on the news last night. Yes, but not vice versa. There is nowhere in the country where, out of necessity, Verizon would need to roam on MetroPCS.

Re: "compatible w/networks operated by ... MetroPCS & Cricket" ??
Nov 11, 2009, 8:11 PM
in the Article: Motorola Announces the Marine Corp Quality Quantico forum

Cricket and MetroPCS use the CDMA 1700 band in regions where the larger wireless carriers already have dibs on the CDMA 800 and CDMA 1900 bands. I'm 99% sure that Verizon and Sprint don't have roaming agreements with Cricket and MetroPCS, so there would be no reason for a Verizon or Sprint phone to be CDMA 1700 capable.

This would be a really intelligent idea if going green was really T-Mobile's one and only noble mission, but I have a feeling this isn't the case. This plan would make T-Mobile make less money than it does now, whereas charging an extra $1.50 to those who receive paper bills would mean more money for T-Mobile. First and foremost, the $1.50 charge is most likely meant to save T-Mobile money, with the environmental benefit being merely a coincidental secondary.

I don't really understand why people have to start stupid arguments like this on a wireless telecom website. Not that I take anything seriously from someone who can't even manage to write a paragraph without multiple spelling mistakes and no substantiation for his or her opinions whatsoever, but I grew up in Connecticut and was open-minded enough to accept a relocation to Tennessee. I remember way back into ancient history (relative to wireless standards) when Sprint charged $3 just to talk to a CSR! If you Google, you can still find the backlash of complaints about it (e.g., http://www.complaints.com/march2002/complaint oftheday.march24.6.htm). That's why I'm a bit stunned that a carrier is trying to nickel and dime for the absolute bare basics again.

in the Article: AT&T Intros New 'Viva Mexico' Calling Plan forum

It would be nice of the U.S. GSM carriers didn't treat Canada like a third-world country and set up a plan similar to the Mexico one for use up there! On the CDMA side, Verizon already has a plan very similar to this for Canada and Sprint has a cheap add-on that allows Canada calls for (I think) a dime a minute. Meanwhile, T-Mobile users are stuck paying $0.49/minute and AT&T $0.69/minute. Is Rogers really that bad of a ...
