Even big red does it. Except their tele sales people go out of their way to sign people up in markets where they have no network coverage. They are even good enough to add data plans so the customer can not use them and then get told that they are being dropped because 100% of their usage is on another carrier's network.

Every carrier should be mandated to allow any competitor with a compatible network to roam on their networks. The price should not be mandated, but negotiated between the carriers.

Some build their business by building their business, others buy their way in. Verizon and AT&T did not get big because the public flocked to them, their gains are modest for the size of carrier they are. They grew at the expense of a smaller competitor. The list is.... You are thinking of it completely backwards. Why should the smaller carrier allow a much larger competitor to roam on their network? What would Verizon's big red map look like without roaming partners networks? Those of you who do not venture outside of a metropolitan area would not understand what the smaller carriers mean to the people they serve. They provide the services those markets care most about for a reasonable price. When you have a billing question you go in ...

Sprint is a better value than Verizon and AT&T. They don't have the customer base of the other two but with the exception of the Nextel purchase they built their network rather than buying it. In most markets Sprint's netrwork is more reliable than Verizon's or AT&T's.

The funding gap is for short term funding, until the end of the year. After that the partners will have budgeted additional money for Clear. They just won't put more into their budgets for the balance of this year. GSM and LTE are not necessarily the fit. LTE is derived from WIMAX like UMTS is derived from CDMA. Clear is looking to run both WIMAX and LTE simultaneously so a T-Mobile partnership is a good fit.

Calling it 4G because it uses an OFDM technology is what is happening. Both LTE and WIMAX use OFDM while T-Mobile's HSPA+ is a CDMA product. 802.16M which will begin deploying next year will allow for 180mhz downloads in a 20mhz wide channel. Next year Clear/Sprint will be able to meet all of the criteria.

One problem: In most markets Verizon has way less bandwidth than AT&T has. Unless of course Verizon chooses to run things on their AWS properties which are not used at this time. CDMA does use bandwidth more efficiently than UMTS but not efficiently enough to make up for the bandwidth issues. The problem AT&T is having with the iPhone is a problem of success. What do you do when you sell a device to millions of people and they use its ...

If you look at the earnings statements for the carriers you will see that they depend on overages for revenue growth. Some of those fees you see are cost recovery fees. The govenment imposes fees on the carrier and does not allow the carrier to call them a tax. Since they go up and down it makes no sense to cover them inside the plan. They are not the same company to company or state to state.

The principle is still the same, it just is a much slower turnaround time in a more complex market. Why do you think companies like Verizon spend so much in marketing? It is to keep the public perception positive. Government intervention in ths type of industry only short circuits any market based corrections. Poor performing companies can continue to operate poorly because there are no market consequences for poor performance.

The FCC is a part of the executive branch and therefore has no authority to write laws. That belongs to the legislative branch. The FCC can regulate usage of the airwaves only according to existing law. They cannot supercede it. Unless congress passes this as a law and the president signs it, it would be struck down by the courts because it falls outside of the juridiction of the FCC. It would be great customer service if the carriers did that voluntarily. I do not believe they should be mandated to do anything of the sort. If some do it and if customers think it is a great idea they will move to that carrier. Carriers who don't do it would not be looked upon favorably. This is how a free market works. Companies who serve their customers well get more customers. Companies who don't serve the customer well ...

I think there is some confusion here. GSM's last technology jump was EDGE. GSM is a TDMA network. UMTS/HSDPA/HSPA and HSPA+ are all CDMA air interfaces. GSM annot mix voice and data at the same time, it takes a wideband (5MHZ channel) CDMA product to do it. Versed is mistaken, virtually EVERY carrier went to CDMA in one form or another. Hate to tell you this but GSM was abandoned in favor of a CDMA air interface in the AT&T and T-Mobile 3G. 3G does not make speakers buzz nor does it alter CRT images. GSM is a 2G product. They kept the GSM data core but use a CDMA air interface in 3G, hence it is called WCDMA.

I agree that Clear should market more but their choice is literally between network buildout and marketing. If Verizon were faced with the same choice they would choose marketing. Verizon will suffer some tarnishing of their brand when people want the product and can't get it. For people who want a product, buildout never happens soon enough. If there is an alternative they will go with it. This is why it is wiser to build the network rather ...

One difference is that the iPhone was a piece of hardware operating on a network that was just about everywhere. 4G is not everywhere. Verizon will market the daylights out of LTE and build a lot of anticipation. A merger would be a good idea if they keep networks separate and brands separate until the time that 3g disappears. Sprint does this successfully with Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile. It would be like GM with all of their sub brands. The problem with the Nextel merger was that iDEN was dying before the merger. Nextel was planning on migrating to CDMA. Sprint tried to merge the networks and brands too soon.

When I was talking about real world I was talking about LTE, which is not commercially available yet. So it is theoretical. HSPA+ comparisons to WIMAX were only in the Philadelphia market. I think there is a misunderstanding here, In Philadelphia HSPA+ was on par with Clear's service. HSPA will burst at 21mbps which means it is capable of that on a dormant network. The Philly tests were not based on a busy network which as you know slows data speeds as the bandwidth gets shared. WIMAX (802.16e) will burst at 40mbps. Many markets will see constant speeds in excess of 20mbps (Portland, Seattle and Las Vegas) in much of the market. WIMAX 802.16m ...
