That's like Sony saying "We're concerned that if we don't sign an exclusive contract with Best Buy, they may refuse to sell our PS3" - the chances of Cingular making a pass at the first ever iPhone because an exclusive agreement wasn't signed is slim to nill.

You mentioned Cingular being the largest US carrier. This is so true. But when a truly hot product comes out, it's foolish for any company to close their doors on other large companies. I use Best Buy and the PS3 as an example in other posts. Would Sony benefit from finding the largest consumer electronics retailer like Best Buy, and shutting out everyone else? If a company wants to sell some serious units, they don't close doors. I'd say ...

I've got a grip :) As I said, I won't be switching in order to buy this phone, much to the detriment of Apple. I'd love to buy it, but I'm going going to be railroaded into Cingular. My point is as follows: If you've got a good product, you shouldn't be forced into selling the exclusive rights. Imagine if Sony decided to sell the PS3 only at Best Buy stores. Why should they do that? And I'm not ...

It's going to be fully locked... and assuming someone can hack the software and unlock it (this is new territory... we're not looking to unlock just another Nokia) you'll still have to worry about every tailor made program which is going to attempt to access Cingular servers and such. Buying grey market unlocked devices for over $400 is a waste... and Apple not selling an unlocked GSM model is a waste.

No other US carriers until 2009

From CNN.com: "Cingular, a unit of AT&T (up $0.13 to $33.94, Charts), will be Apple's sole U.S. partner. It's an exclusive multiyear agreement, which means no other carrier will be able to sell the iPhone through 2009." I'm sick of short-sighted companies, including Apple. Why in the hell would you lock up a phone to a single carrier for two years? By that point, the phone will be 100% obsolete. I'm sick and tired of being forced from one carrier to another ...

I had a customer come in the other day - they said they just wanted a nice quality phone because they already had a laptop loaded with the features one might look for in a PDA-phone. The guy "didn't want a Motorola" - so I put him in the brand new Nokia 6103 which packs some solid features. He took it outside, close to a busy street, and made some calls. K1 expected in November - probably late November since there isn't an exact date out there. I've held a K1 with fully functioning Cingular setup - so I know it's going there. V3i is expected in mid-to-late August.

I was lucky enough to see and hold one recently. If you didn't like RAZR, you probably won't like this one. I, however, loved my V3 and V3i, so this was a nature fit. It's a bit longer, but the reduction in width makes it fit in the hand better. The style is pretty sweet, with the more stylish keypad. The screen, though smaller, looks more lifelike and brilliant than the original RAZRs. The one I held was loaded with MEdia ...

So are you saying that the speaker for calls is too quiet? To me, that's a deal breaker. I understand not having a keypad - and how that would be a pain... however, quiet calls would kill the unit for me. Also, does the phone have voice activated dialing? If so, is it relatively good? I'm considering the phone, but I'm hoping it's a decent upgrade from the PDA2K which I had last -- ideas? simguy05@gmail.com Thanks!

Does anyone remember why AT&T was broken up in the first place? They were deemed a monopoly - and that was when they had the wireline services dominated. Now they've got wireline and wireless... wonder how long until the government breaks them up again for being an even bigger monopoly than their original parent.

These are truly some ugly phones. Did anyone in Finland hear a loud thud when the first 72xx line was introduced? I can tell you, it was loud enough that I heard it all the way over here in the US. These phones are just as ugly (and just as useless) as the last batch. Sorry Nokia, you got your dibs on the E-line, but this line is going to earn you a good hardy spanking.

To me, when the phone is "closed" I think the design is sharp and interesting. But when the slide springs open, I see a generic and boring keypad - the kind I would expect to see on a phone from 1992. Come on guys, make the inner portions of the phone as cosmetically beautiful as the outside. Oh yeah, 850 would be nice too.

I took back the S710a - great camera, junk phone. What good is a phone that cannot maintain signal. The RAZR does an excellent job with reception - something most SE phones cannot attain (with the exception of the Z520 - I'm impressed with its signal) The 6682 is great if you don't mind a backpack to carry it in.

I guess the problem is that they have about 12 phones "coming soon" that look far too similar to this one. Biggest difference is that swivel at the bottom, which although it's nice, isn't profound. If anything, this phone is rather fat and chunky, in my opinion. Perhaps the RAZR products are spoiling me. This phone seems very... eh... The RAZR2 - now that looks exciting! :D

You've got a point - after Cingular's got it for 6 months straight, it does become an old phone. It's why I don't own the RAZR V3 --- because by the time you could get one here in the US (OEM - US released w/ warranty) everyone and their dog had one. Where's the fun in that? If Moto does decide to offer some toys to the other players, I'll buy one.

T-Mobile has the cards to play right now. Sure, Vod might be able to win a few rounds down the road, but I would agree that T-mobile has the advantage now. And today is very important. Make some extra revenue today with this "world plan" and finance this 10B upgrade. Good idea. I hope someone from T-mobile is listening :D

I appreciate your honesty. It is something Cingular will have to deal with, and quick. Wal-Mart these days is the biggest and almost unrivaled, yet they have big problems now with public perception. With LNP, customers can pack up everything and head over to another carrier in a moment. I will admit Cingular gets the coolest phones, but as far as network is concerned, being GSM, their network is our network. These days, even when I roam on to another ...

I'm with a carrier that doesn't use 850 - and I won't be held hostage to Cingular's attempt at forcing 850 down my throat. The original and default freq in the US is 1900 - that's why all models carry 1900 (if tri-band) but 850 is interchangable. Agreed with the SE part - to an extent. I agree with a lot of what you've said. However, Motorola needs to get their phones in peoples hands. Right now, all they can do is push handsets which price $250-400 - people see the RAZR commercial (and now the ROKR), come in to the store, see the price, and then get the free Nokia phone. You're right - it's great for Cingular (and Nokia), but bad for Moto. There is only a certain percentage of people who will ...

Yes - and it's a shame, because I try to support Moto where I can - being that it is an American company (not too many of those left) - but it just seems Nokia has better business sense... they may not have as much TV time with Cingular footing the bill, but they make their phones available to a far bigger audience.

The SLVR V8 hasn't been released yet. What they can do is charge top $$$ for the SLVR because of size, and top $$$ for the ROKR for the function. THEN, they can meld the two together and charge top $$$ for the combo. Excellent for the business, bad for the consumer.

Advances by the competition - like the W800i with 4 times the capacity (2 gigs) - plus a 2mp camera (versus the ROKR's VGA).

Sep 7, 2005, 3:02 PM

Motorola would sell a lot more phones if they didn't lock themselves down to Cingular. I'm with T-Mobile, and I'm sick and tired of Motorola always ditching T-Mobile. By the time it's released to T-Mobile, a new phone will be out - and odds are, Cingular will get that one first too. Shame on Motorola for shunning all of the other big and small carriers. Guess I'll be buying the N91.

850 is mainly for only a portion on Cingular's network. My company uses 1900. For a list of all the US companies that use 1900, go to http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_u s.shtml 43/78 US networks are 1900 - that includes portions of the same network. There are a lot of 1900 only networks. The company I'm with only uses 1900.

I'll keep checking!
