What should they be doing for those of us in NA? Maybe you want them to take a page from the Samsung playbook... make a poor quality phone and then put it in 35 different shells, sell the carriers on the lower price point and the price-conscious/feature-hungry consumers will overlook the poor quality. Note to Samsung: "you can color that turd any color you want, it's still a turd!"

Not bitter and... what do you consider a quality handset? An iPhone? Here's a conversation I've had many times with iPhone users: iPhone user: I love my iPhone but AT&T sucks. me: why do they suck? iPhone user: dropped calls, poor signal, yada yada. me: hmmm, I'm on AT&T (I have a nokia) and I never have dropped calls or poor signal. iPhone user: well I just hate AT&T. me: I wonder if it has anything to do with poor hardware that causes you to ...

Best not to be sold next to that AT&T garbage anyway

It's unfortunate that consumers in the states still can't get a decent phone through their carriers. But Nokia is wise to stay away from the junk peddling AT&T who sells dime-a-dozen-Samsung/Motorola/Sony Ericsson/LG phones that break like a toothpick, have poor call quality and suddenly lock up for no reason. The X7 is a high end phone, so it wouldn't interest those users anyway. AT&T has another reason not to push it... because it would lure too ...

All of these companies take some liberties with our freedoms! Apple wants to have complete control over what network you can use it on & where you get your apps. Microsoft with Windows tried to force us to use all of their built in apps instead of using better apps from other sources... internet explorer anyone? They were told by the courts that they can't do that. Now, google is quickly trying to control our ...

I don't know that researching the app makes any difference. Correct me if I'm wrong but according to this article it's not "what" you're downloading but "where" you are downloading it from. "it grafts itself onto other software that a user may legitimately download"

You're right, Google is supposed to make money, I was just really making light of the original post. On the other hand when people say how great Google is for providing this free and open Android OS, they need to open their eyes to the bigger picture. At risk of sounding like our grandparents, nothing is ever free.

What about the fact that Google, by my definition anyway, is spy-ware? Don't they track everything you do through their various services and applications and use that information in order to be able to sell the use of that information to advertisers? Not to mention the share that they earn from marketplace listings?

...why Nokia is the world's largest phone manufacturer. I am not into entry level phone's but this thing is loaded with mid-to-high-end features in a well constructed package at a very low price. WIFI, Touch screen, 5 megapixel camera, micro SD, micro USB, mail, applications, music. Add to that the praise of the build quality, call quality and great music player. It makes me wonder if I really need a smartphone at all. Great job Nokia ...

Great post. There are a lot of Symbian haters. I think he just read somewhere that Symbian is outdated and complicated. Could it be on some Cnet article? When Nokia rolled out S60 5th edition it had some issues but they quickly and frequently updated and improved that system. I expect much the same with S^3. The market demands that phone's/OS's get released before they are fully ready but at least these phone's ...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's the carrier that locks carrier subsidized phones. Further, when you agree to the contract, you accept these locks. To my knowledge, Apple is the only manufacturer that practices this sort of locking and that is why they are getting the brunt of this.

news flash: subsidized phones are cheaply made and they're expensive. Furthermore, if you've every had the chance to buy a new unlocked phone, you would see that the quality is superior to a comparable locked device. Another news flash: customer care centers are a waste. The staff has no technical training, service is slow, they don't carry a full selection of devices or accessories, they charge a premium for items in the store that is above ...

We are confusing the carriers role vs the manufacturers roll. This revision was aimed at makers and in particular Apple. I applaud this revision because it is a scam that apple is pulling off on consumers... using great marketing, they have suckered consumers into (quote) buying these phones. However, these consumers don't really own these phones because they can't do what they want with them. In fact these devices are designed to generate endless ...

You can go to hundreds of sites. I research a lot of phones here and on cnet. Cnet can give you a list of stores along with prices. I would usually start at cnet, but then check the prices at the manufacturers website, amazon and dell(who now sell unlocked phones). You can also find good or like new phones on craigslist. The thing to keep in mind is that some phones are not available ...

I'm still confused; in your earlier post you said you have unlocked many t-mobile and AT&T phones. But here you're saying you buy factory unlocked phones. If it's the later, I do agree that it is better to buy factory unlocked phones and that it cost more upfront but saves you in the long run.

It's not the same data plan. A smartphone has two options 200 MB for $15 or 2 GB for $25. A non-smartphone or (in this case) factory unlocked smartphone can get unlimited data for $15. I'm not a particularly heavy data user but my typcial data ranges from 500 MB to 1 GB per month. That does not include wifi usage when I'm at work or at home. Therefore if I had a subsidized ...

Your statement confused me so can you elaborate? It sounds like you saying that it's possible to get a subsidized smartphone without being forced into a 2 year commitment and the required smartphone dataplan? Also, when you say that you have to shell out a little more money, are you talking about the higher no-commitment price? Because I know you can get better deals on factory unlocked phones than those no-committment prices that AT&T et al ...

I stand corrected. When I was shopping for a new phone about 2 weeks ago, all of the smartphones had a caption that said: requires $30 data plan. Now they say requires $15 dollar data plan. Upon further investigation, that $15 data plan is for up to 200 MB of data and does not include tethering. my $15 data plan is unlimited and I can tether my X6 as much as I want. If you want to tether ...

There is no "deal" when you buy a subsidized phone. Take AT&T for instance: if you buy a subsidized smartphone (iPhone, etc), they force you into paying $30/month for a data plan for 2 years. That's $720! Then they make you pay a discounted rate: $199.99 for the current Blackberry Bold or HTC Tilt. Then they force you to pay a monthly fee for things like navigation. That phone is costing you close to ...

I know that Apple locks the iPhone (which is why I will never buy one), correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Nokia has ever done this. I've had two factory unlocked S60 phones and I could create my own apps and/or download apps from a multitude of sources without so much as a warning from my device.

When you've got an OS with the microkernal of Symbian^3, it's so fast and efficient that you can run a more basic processor without losing speed. What you do lose with this processor is the high battery consumption. Many S60 phones run on slower processors than competing phones from their competitors but you never hear that these phones are too slow. These processors are plenty fast to run the best multi-tasking phones out there.

The biggest drawback of the iphone is the hardware. Every generation of the iphone is 2-3 years behind the offerings of HTC and Nokia. Next, The Apple Store: They force you to go through the apple store so they can make money. This often keeps you from getting the best apps possible. With Symbian anyone can use any app they want and they can get it from anywhere they want. S60 phones have thousands of free ...
