in the Article: Spec for Wireless Charging to Be Set Within 6 Months forum

Is using a touchstone-like system any more or less power efficient than a regular charger? We already waste too much electricity by keeping electronics plugged in longer than needed and I am curious if more energy is lost by using this system. If so, we should rethink our priorities.

I have no intention of arguing the finer points of network quality, equipment quality/selection, or customer service with anyone. I will say that I am greatly enjoying the entertainment value being provided by Verizon and AT&T and now (hopefully) Sprint. I am all for a marketing slugfest between carriers and just hope Sprint and T-mobile can rise to the challenge. May the best marketing/legal team win!! :D

in the Verizon forum

I've had the Pearl for over a year and would recommend the phone. 1. They keyboard took about 3 weeks to adjust to the suretype (coming from a full qwerty). If you text from a standard 9-key pad, you shouldn't have any trouble. For me, the size savings was worth the trade from a full-aize qwerty. 2. I have never had any issues with the phone locking or deleting items although I do use a memory card for media ...

Okay, I had nothing better to do than read this long series of posts and come to the following conclusions. 1. Gekk0 wants access to immediate phone records to ensure domestic tranquility and believes Verizon should provide them since other companies do the same. 2. Lots of people want to defend Verizon by stating that this carrier knows what they are doing and it is wrong for Gekk0 to make demands of them. Some people are more polite than ...

You should see an automatic update. Anyone with the lower $15/$20 packages gets moved to the new plan. My guess it that you move with your bill cycle date, but you would have to check with VZW on that technicality.

in the Motorola KRZR K1m forum

Given that all of Verizon's rebate forms have an expiration date of October 10, and the KRAZR is not listed on the form, I would not expect the phone before October 11 (and yes, I am certain it would have a mail in rebate - most of Verizon's camera phones do). Also, I noticed a link on the Motorola site today offering to send updates about the KRAZR. I seem to recall that such a link for the Q ...

Maybe VZ will the their standard interface on the phone as the default for the masses (i.e. those that actually like it or don't care) but let the die hards change it. That way they get the best of both worlds. Most people probably wouldn't bother to change it and the ones that would can quit complaining.

Re: Monkey See Money Do

in the Article: Verizon Asks Vodafone To Sell Back Stake forum

I agree that Verizon's first move is to get the remaining stake from Vodafone. Wireless is the money driver for the company and getting all the revenuse vs. 55% would be well worth it. Beyond that, I don't see that Verizon needs to do much buying. Aquiring Qwest would be a waste of money (given that Qwest does not have a wireless division and wireline subscribers continue to fall). This also appies to the Sprint/Alltel landline divisions. Given their ...

My guess would be that a new handset would be required since Qualcomm is going to use the 700mhz band and Verizon's phones carry chips for 850/1900 and analog. It would be nice if VZ started launching phones with those chips now/soon so customer's don't have to wait another year before upgrading to a capable handset....

Re: National Access - Which Plan
Dec 2, 2004, 11:20 PM
in the Verizon forum

Verizon offers a National Access plan that combines data and voice calling together. In pricing, it is identical to the Singlerate plan, but allows access on the 1X network. Plans start at $35 for 150 minutes and go up. You can divide your minutes between voice calling or internet connections as you see fit. You use whatever browser software you like and don't need Verizon's ISP. This plan does not charge roaming nor are you charged separately for data. ...

Dec 2, 2004, 10:45 PM

Yes, there are problems with this scenario too. 1. This is a ported number. If the original account is closed, the ported number will revert back to the original carrier and be lost (unless you go back to that carrier, reopen an account, get lucky enough to get the same number again, and start the process all over). 2. Indirect agents are still taking a risk. Running a credit application will still show that there was service under the ...

Well, two points. First, I don't know that many phones, especially those by VZW, that allow ringback when someone calls in, and I have read quite a few user manuals. Second, is anyone really surprised by this? I'm sure other carriers will do the exact same thing - it's just one more source of revenue to exploit from people that don't have anything better to do with their money. Don't be surprised for Cingular and everyone else to follow ...

This was my point exactly and I think I may have been misinterpreted. I also said that Cingular may give VZW some competition once they get running (post growing pains) but I did not mean to imply that Cingular would offer better service or plans. I am simply stating that the license acquisition is business as usual for VZW and that we have NOT seen any real response to the merger from VZW. Given that VZW is still dominant ...

Nov 5, 2004, 9:52 PM

I have played with them both and made some test calls in a limited area. Signal and call quality were equal. Regarding the camera, I think the LG is better. Less distortion and better color plus you have flash capability. Regarding the speaker phone, the 265 is better. I don't like the plastic feel/touch of the LG but the 265 isn't any better, feeling a little flimsy. Given Moto's recent history of issues, I would go with the LG. ...

in the Article: Verizon Wireless Buys NextWave Spectrum for $3 Billion forum

I think this acquisition is standard operating procedure for VZW more than a respone to Cingular (I expect a real response to follow sometime next year when Cingular starts getting on their feet). VZW seems to have a knack for grabbing spectrum fairly cheap when no one is looking (like when they bought out Qwest's network). While spectrum is nice and should always be sought, I would like to see VZ dump more money into cell site construction. I ...

The "VX" is an LG designation but Audiovox did make a 4000 series phone. The 4000 (4000, 4500)and 9000 (9000, 9100, 9155, 9500, 9900) series were probably its best line. Can't say I was impressed with anything off the 8000 line. While certainly not my first choice in cell phone, I am interested to see what the new company can produce.

Re: Roaming Options: Automatic-A or Automatic-B?
Oct 1, 2004, 8:50 PM

A and B band do not carry into PCS. PCS is divided into different 'blocks' with each carrier assigned a block within the 1900mhz spectrum (assuming they have a license for 1900mhz). As far as who uses A and B and where they are, it doesn't matter now that phones can auto-switch between the two. It did matter with some old analog phones b/c you would have to remember to switch the band yourself or get hit with roaming ...

Sorry if this is boring, but you asked. This is how it was explained to me: back in the day (way back when the FCC didn't think cell phones would be all that popular) the government wanted to create competition and divided the 800mhz spectrum into the A band and B band (separate bands being created to avoid interference issues). Usually, the B band would go to the local phone company (example, Verizon is B in Md. b/c Bell Atlantic ...

Re: one last question

in the Samsung SCH-A670 forum

Various regions may be different, but the general answer is "NO". You cannot comine new every two with a buy one get one offer (see related post on what qualifies as new every two). It would be nice if you could combine both, but you can't mix discounts (and this is typical of most companies so I don't think Verizon is being especially cheap). The buy one get on on this phone is still a pretty hot deal though.

Jul 2, 2004, 10:48 PM

General Responses. 1. Yes, GSM is here to stay, in one form or another. It is the dominant worldwide technology and will likely remain that way for some time. It doesn't need to 'overtake' CDMA because it already has. That doesn't equate to it being the best technology or providing the best service. 2. CDMA is not analog based. 3. You may not care about what Consumer Reports and JD Powers say, but LOTS of other folks do. Plenty ...

My bad. Didn't read far enough down the list to see that someone else already said the same thing. Sorry for wasting time. As an aside: Verizon uses a good deal of 800Mhz spectrum, especially on the east coast. The penetration rate between 800 and 1900 isn't THAT great to make much comparison (but if you wanted to get picky, I think 1900 is better b/c it sounds clearer and your battery lasts longer). Main point in comparison is ...

Alltel and Verizon have long term roaming agreements but do not share all of their towers. In areas where both companies have license, they won't share. I roam on Alltel in NC and SC b/c Verizon has no license there, but will not roam on Alltel in VA even when Verizon's signal is bad b/c both own market in VA. Neither wants to pay roaming charges to the other if it can be helped, even if that means poor ...

Figure I will throw one in. Different regions may have different requirements but my info says NE2 does not expire if you signed b/f Nov. 25 of 02 and does expire after six months for anyone in the program after Nov. 25 02. Again, different regions may have different rules.

While the 6000 is out for a couple carriers, I assume yours is probably with Verizon. Check the software on the phone (settings, phone info, software). If the software string ends in a "5" run it by a technician to have an update to the "6" version. I noticed fewer variations in the signal one I had this done. By the way, I also have a V60. Its signal never fluctuates, but to be honest the call quality on ...

May 11, 2004, 10:02 AM

The six month expiration is a new policy that just recently went into effect. Since you signed into your NE2 program over two years ago (if your contract expired in January), you are 'grandfathered' into the clause that lets you keep your NE2 until you use it. Regardless, I don't know any sales representative that would let you walk from a new phone and contract over such a trivial policy, especially since the account would show you did qualify. ...

Feb 17, 2004, 10:33 PM
in the Article: Cingular To Buy AT&T Wireless forum

I doubt Verizon will do much in the short term, in fact, they may benefit. 1. Cingular and AT&T will likely spend the remainder of the year consolidating their networks and infrastructure. Once completed, it will compete with Verizon's network. But Verizon has that kind of network now and customers may port numbers during the process (customers can be fickle and awful impatient). Plus, Verizon is deploying Broadband this summer, which will open a whole new area of competition. ...

You have the option to lock the 4400 into an all digital mode through the service programming menu ("0" from the menu screen and I believe six more "0"s for the security code). I know three people with the 4400. They also live in the middle of nowhere and locked their phones into all digital and say the service is much better. Hope this helps.

Feb 3, 2004, 10:25 PM

In case someone hasn't responded (and if they have, sorry for wasting the space). To get technical: GSM is a variant of TDMA. TDMA transmits digital signal by breaking down the signal in segments of time and transmitting them through the system. Typically, a TDMA system can hold approximately 3-5 calls per channel (a typical cell tower holds 430 or so channels on the 'a' side and the same on the 'b' side - different carriers use different 'sides' ...
