AT&T wireless EDGE technology is out? Really? When I went on their network it wasn't even listen, and it probably won't be out on the general network until EV-DO goes nationwide. Then when EV-DV comes out, what is AT&T going to go to then? Then when 3XRTT comes out, AT&T is going to have to transmogrify their entire network into CDMA ANYWAY to get WCDMA, which won't even be comparable to 3XRTT anyway. And it will ...

Wrong. TMobile isn't 3G. The difference is TMobile is GSM and Verizon is CDMA. Also, Verizon is the closest American company to having a 3G network (Introduction of EV-DO puts Verizon firmly at 2.5G, with no other company even offering nationwide highspeed of 144k burst. Sorry folks, it doesn't exist yet), with Sprint somewhat following up. AllTell will work on VZW, no real unlocking necessary. I've activated a few AllTell phones on VZW, so I know ...

Oh gotcha. We recieved a dummy KX414 probably 3 weeks before it came out. Generally you know a phone is being released (Nokia 2200 series phone we're supposed to get? where's that?) from the software lists and whatever. Looking forward to the 610, whenever thats coming out.

I'm at WBV (Washington Baltimore Virginia) area...we know anywhere from 1-2 weeks beforehand. We knew that the KX414 and the Samsung I-600 were coming out almost a month before release. :D

GSM is glorified TDMA. Sorry man, but for GSM to become 3G it has to transmutate into CDMA, so what does that tell you? And WCDMA doesn't have the bandwidth nor the transfer speeds that 3XRTT is going to have, and it's not going to be a minimal difference. ATT releasing a high-speed 3G network in a year? B.S. They don't even have the revenue to increase their footprint. They might have hotspots like T-Mobile, but I ...

Thats bullcrap. Tell them to forward you to technical support so they can refresh your registration in the system. The phone has nothing to do with it, and day long delays are NOT typicial, unless you're in areas with no servce

A phone company that focuses more on being able to make phone calls than fancy gadgets and cool little thing-a-ma-bobbers? Sorry people, I have a cell phone to make calls. If it can send 2 hours of streaming video to the big-screen at RFK staidum, thats a plus, but it has to make calls FIRST. You people are so hung up on features that have nothing to do with making calls. Perhaps you're a little but upset you're stuck ...

The Samsung that spring has with the rotating flip is also scheduled for VZW. I'm not sure of the model number or when it comes out, but it will probably be the next one we get.

With all of this talk about the Cingular/AWS or TMobile merger, it could be a possibility of a Sprint/VZW meger is the dominant CDMA carrier. That would be paradise, I think... I can dream, tho, can't I?

u can't use VZW on GSM networks. Their phones operate at 800 and 1900, GSM operates on 900 and 1800 if I'm not mistaken, I'm not a GSM expert. If it doesn't recognize the frequency, then it doesn't support it. And 3g has nothing to do with being worldwide, and what do you mean digital cannot be 3g? 3G simply means "3rd Generation", and has to do with the ability/quality of the network, not its size.

Actually, 3XRTT is the true definition of the final 3G product on CDMA. EV-DO (Rvolution-Data Only) and EV-DV (Evolution Data/Voice) have to come before 3XRTT.

VZW is not attws/cingular. attws/cingular is TDMA/GSM, and you can't use VZW phones on there. Just FYI, 1XRTT is not 3G. Neither is EV-DO nor EV-DV. It's like...2.5G. 3G is 3XRTT.

Please, start. First obvious question is: How does Sprint have the largest network? It doesn't. Second obvious question is: How can Sprint have a 3G network? It's impossible, from a technical and financial standpoint. 2.0 mbps at the end of the year? Please. They don't even have phones that can handle EV-DO or EV-DV yet, and those data transmission speeds are nowhere near 2.0 mbps, more around 500kbps burst. Third obvious question: CDMA2000. It's a word thats ...

Verizon has acquired other smaller companies and cell sites, as I said, but they have spent a ton of money upgrading and building new sites as well. They just built one, from the ground up, not more than 2 or 3 miles from my house. They have been BUILDING several sites on the west coast. To say all they do is purchase small sites is ludicrous. It holds as much water as saying Sprint has the largest ...

Deathgnr, you're on crack. You need to lay the pipe down. Here's the FACTS: Sprint has the largest PCS network that was built from the ground up. That means they're comparing themselves to noone, since Verizon has built their network from the ground up, from acquisitions, and from roaming agreements. The VZW network is much larger than Sprint, and covers an extra 30 million people in the USA. Pure fact, my friend. Sprint does not have a ...

All this about secretly renewing contracts and saying its in the best interest of the customer is a load of garbage. Any decent carrier would let you change your rate plan to fit your phone usage WITHOUT renewing contracts(as long as you don't go into a different promotion, and as long as it isn't a grandfathered plan, mind you), and would do it when you called, and would do it without sneaking some months behind your back and ...

Re: CDMA or GSM, HELP!
Dec 2, 2003, 1:10 AM

As the old saying goes: If it isn't broke, don't fix it. I've worked with one GSM carrier (T-Mobile), one TDMA carrier (Cellular One), and one CDMA carrier (VZW) and CDMA is by far the most impressive of the lot. TDMA isn't even worth looking at...all the major TDMA carriers are frantically switching to GSM, and this is going to cause MAJOR issues with the network. To put it simply, "rigging" a TDMA system to be GSM (which ...

Analog is going bye-bye, no matter which area you're in. The FCC has a mandate that all cellular service MUST be digital in less than a decade (this point might have already been stated, I'm not sure). If you think digital cell service is unreliable, try replacing the entire digital network across the us with an analog one. You'll notice: Constant busy signals. God forbid you ever try to talk while moving, because the handoff from ...

I'm not sure which communications store you were at, but I know for a fact refurbished startacs are plentiful in my reigon. As far as just replacing it, they'll more than likely recommend you upgrade from the startac for these reasons: Refurbished phones don't come with batteries, back plates, or warranties past 6 months (3 in most areas). The warranty might not effect you if you have the TEC insurance, since this gives you an extended warranty. Don't be ...

GSM/EDGE is not stable. To say that spectrum doesn't effect the customer is a fallacy as well, as code division offers much more capacity (i.e. less dropped calls, static, fading, and overall better reception) than the GSM system. 1XRTT and EV-DO are extremely stable systems, I know this from first hand experience for this simple reason: it's a natural progression. If GSM is such a fantastic platform, then why does it have to be converted to CDMA to ...

In my area, customers have been telling us the LGVX6000 and Nokia 3589 (VZW) seem to be picking up the best. I went and worked at a different communications store up the road, maybe 80-90 miles, for a week. Up there, the old Audiovox 9000 and 9155 were the most prized phones because they picked up better than any phone on the market. People were adamant about getting them...to the point of scouring EBay for them ...
