Raw speed vs software intelligence

in the Apple iPhone forum

Like many of you, I was bummed that the initial iPhone won't be 3G. (and despite my screen name, I see Apple's warts as well as their good points.) What I suspect will help things a lot is OS X's incredible multitasking ability. I bet you'll be able to set up iPhone to load / refresh a half dozen of your favorite web pages in the background as you're texting, calling, listening to music. Kind of like the always-on aspect of the Sidekick. It's ...

Say, Opera or the Firefox mobile browser?

The key for this phone will be the web browser.

WAP? HTML? Javascript? EVDO, a good form factor, a good screen, and a do-it-all web browser will make this a compelling choice.

There was talk of one of their phones incorporating Danger technology.

Slim case for Pearl? Like a sleeve?
Oct 18, 2006, 9:18 AM
in the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 forum

My boss just got a Pearl, but his gripe is all the thick leather cases make it as big as a Treo again. Does anyone know of a thin plastic sleeve for the phone that would make it pocketable?

I'm trying to find that too. Called 611 and they had no idea. I saw one lame list on the coverage map, and if that's it, the list is VERY limited. Their idea of a "city" is pushing it.

The difference is that Danger does it on the fly, seamlessly, while preserving your bookmarks, passwords, cookies, logins, etc. No extra URLs to enter. They make it invisible and you don't have to "do" anything.

But you're not comparing apples to apples. Because of Danger's on-the-fly file-shrinking technology, in the real world, the GPRS-only Sidekick II browses the web faster than many EDGE phones. I've done the side-by-side tests to prove it. http://www.howardforums.com/showthread .php?t=831643 Therefore, the EDGE Sidekick 3 should be proportionally faster.

The Bluetooth and Music Player are good news. I feel a little iffy about the hard plastic keys. I loved the rubbery ones. Better news for me is EDGE support. I can't wait for somebody with one of these in their hands to compare web browsing speed. I wonder what class of EDGE? That will make a difference as it competes with the EVDO smartphones.

It's a shame. Device makers shouldn't see 3G alone as a panacea. At every data speed, Danger's solution makes data connections more useful and more usable.

in the HTC 8125 / 8100 / MDA (USA) / K-JAM / P4300 (Wizard) forum

The Wizard is more of a real PDA, with many great functions. It has slower GPRS data but also has Danger's proxy technology, which more or less equalizes web speed with EDGE. The Wizard has many new and superior features, but if you do a lot of typing, you will quickly miss the Sidekick's separate row of real number keys on the keyboard. Entering passwords, etc. on the Wizard is a pain.

Wrong package? Isn't EDGE EDGE as far as Cingular goes? unlimited MediaNet, WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM CINGULAR1 I just tested it in a Verizon Wireless store next to a nearly identical xv6700(in a non-EVDO city) and the identical device beat it using only 1xRTT. 126 KBPS VS 86KBPS.

Disappointing EDGE speed
Jan 28, 2006, 1:51 PM
in the AT&T forum

I'm only getting about 64 Kbps in a downtown area. I'm using the standard WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM username and CINGULAR1 password. Is there some other setting that brings increased speed? My phone is supposed to be an EDGE class 10 device.

Jan 27, 2006, 5:52 PM

I have a Sidekick II. I have the chance to use another PDA phone on Cingular for a few months. I'm debating whether to discontinue T-Mobile service, or keep my data-only plan, in case Danger offers us a special deal on the Sidekick III in a couple of months. But traditionally, hasn't T-Mobile offered better prices to new customers than upgrade customers? (I'm long past my contract.) How long do you have to be without service to be considered a new customer? What ...

Is it okay to sell my insurance replacement phone? How soon?
Jan 27, 2006, 5:46 PM
in the AT&T forum

My Nokia 6620 was lost in a taxicab in Puerto Rico last month. I got a $50 replacement through LockLine because I had to. But I was getting ready to buy a new PDA phone anyway. Do I have to wait a certain amount of time before selling my refurb replacement? Is there any problem with me selling the refurb, as long as it's to another Cingular customer? For that matter, is the 6620 locked to Cingular? Thanks.

What do you think of the Qtek 9100 and the various European Wizard variants? I'm thinking about picking up one of those so I can try it on my grandfathered $20 unlimited data plan on Cingular, without signing a new contract just yet. I know the processor isn't as fast, but perhaps that means it's kinder to the battery.

That makes me want to know what kinds of data traffic are blocked before I sign up for an EVDO plan. I want to use it like a mini-laptop, and do anything I'd normally do with a laptop. What kinds of data traffic are blocked?

I'm a Sidekick II user myself, and have many of the same feelings. My take: the elegance of the Sidekick OS goes a long way toward overriding its shortcomings. It's just so, usable. Example. I used to have a Treo 600 but I sold it because it was so much harder to multitask and to type on the keyboard. With the scroll wheel and the multitasking on the Sidekick, you can be sending IMs, Googling something, and composing an e-mail all ...

Does this mean it will work as long as you purchase PocketMac software for sync? Does PocketMac make a 6700-compatible version?
