Yeah, the consensus is that the SGH-i500 will be European only, tho' I can't tell why. It supports US freqs. And frankly I'd rather have the i500 than the i505. I don't have much use for the twist screen. Unfortunately Rich doesn't have the i505 listed in the database yet :( so I can't do a feature comparison between the two.

Rich, I have not been able to find data on the Samsung SGH-i505 on your site. The phone is not out yet, but I was wondering if the data is just unavailable or are you just too busy to add it? I know the new forums have to be eating a huge amount of your time. I (for one) appreciate your dedication to this project. Thanks, AtP PS Samsung is not in the spell checker. :)

Erm, with Bluetooth you should sync the PC with the old phone, then swap the SIM over and sync the new phone with the PC. Forget copying all those numbers over to the SIM, just use that for emergencies like a dead battery and you have to borrow a friend's phone and put your SIM into it.

There is no 1800 in North America. 1900 (PCS) was created around the same time digital was taking off, and all three digital techs (GSM, CDMA, and TDMA) were quickly deployed in it. AMPS (analog) is the only technology not deployed in 1900. Thanks for the good info. ...

Rich, You have forums for each carrier, for each phone, for the board itself, and numerous other options (phone OS, new tech, etc). Why not add a forum for the different arcticles, too? Case in point: I just read the very good article Prepaid: Exposed https://www.phonescoop.com/articles/prepaid_e xposed/ but there is one error in it that I know of, and as a prepaid user I would also like to add my personal experiences and insights, and hear the personal experiences and insights ...

As I understand it 800/850 are really the same band in the US (or is it all of North America?), and that this band is currently AMPS only but is switching over to GSM. 900 GSM and 1800 GSM are what the rest of the world uses. And 1800 is what the US (N.A.?) has been using for digital mobile service. Is all of the above correct, and if not will someone please enlighten me? Thanks in advance! AtP

I have heard nothing but good about the Nokia 3650's RF reception, and it has all the features you want, except that it's rather large. You can wait for the 3660 if you can't stand the 3650's funky keypad, and see how it's RF is.

Right. I don't click ads except for info (i.e. to shop) or to buy so I'm not worried about skewing your numbers. I do however recommend good deals that I see advertised here (or on other forums), it would be nice to be able to refer them to others and give credit to you since I saw the ad here. I figure it also kind of wastes an advertiser's "incident" when I do a bunch of reloads looking ...

Rich, If you could add a "paid advertising" section (or some such) to the "Links" section it would help me support you. I click through, and have referred several other people to, sites I have seen advertised here. Of course this would require some more maintenance from you since you would want to remove past advertiser's links from that page. Well, it's just a thought. I am of course assuming that you get paid for click throughs and/or ...

That strikes me as odd. Wasn't Symbian originally designed for the Psion, a PDA? And wasn't it only after the original company went bankrupt that Symbian went "open source"? Or am I wrong about all this?

I believe that the SPH-i500 also supports touchscreen, however it's also PalmOS, and CDMA to boot. :( My next phone will probably be a 3650 or 3660 so I'll get to check out Series 60 first hand.

Does Series 60 support Touchscreen?
Oct 19, 2003, 1:24 PM
in the S60 (Symbian) forum

I'm a long time PalmOS user who's looking to pick up a combined PDA/mobile phone. I don't like the Treo or Titanium series (I prefer clamshell designs) and I'm looking to keep my options open. Symbian (Series 60 anyway) looks like it might be a good alternative, if there are plenty of apps out there and it's stable. So... does it? (see title) PS Rich, Symbian is not in the spell checker. :)

You could put a link to my "watched list" at the bottom (or top) of the Forums page. Frankly I'd rather not receive email every time I have a reply posted to a thread I'm watching. I'd much rather manage all that on the Web board itself. Thanks for your prompt responses!

Question about EDGE
Oct 19, 2003, 12:07 AM
in the Techs & Trends forum

Edge is defined in the PhoneScoop glossary as: -------------------------------------- -------- EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) An upgrade for GSM/GPRS networks that triples data speeds over standard GPRS. Because it is based on existing GSM technology, EDGE is a smooth upgrade for GSM network operators. It also works within existing spectrum, making it ideal for countries without dedicated 3G spectrum, such as the US. -------------------------------------- -------- Does that mean it will work with current GPRS client phones? PS Rich ...

SGH-i500 dead?
Oct 18, 2003, 3:41 PM
in the Rumor Mill forum

Rumor has it that it is "delayed" and with the SGH-i505 slated for release early next year it's been speculated that the i500 is not going to happen. Anyone have news or thoughts on the subject? Also, is the i505 coming to America? I have seen no mention of that and have no idea what GSM bands it's on. Help anyone? I really want a decent GSM clamshell Palm OS phone. Not that I'm picky ...
