So, if you got a "free" or a subsidized phone from T-Mobile, you'd pay, for example, $80/month for service, but if bought an unlocked Nokia elsewhere, you'd pay $60/month for the same service. Because they no longer offer this, I guess that few people liked the idea. But if you think about it, over the course of a 2-year countract, that's $480 that you paid for the "free" phone. And if you bought one of the ...

Yes, exactly. By the way, I should've mentioned that T-Mobile USA used to offer a $20/month discount to those who bought their phones elsewhere: the Even More Plus plans. So, if you got a "free" or a subsidized

Well, it's a little more complicated than that. The short of it is, the U.S. consumers prefer to pay the rather inflated price for their phones to the network operators over the course of a 2-year contract rather than buy the phones upfront, and this makes more of the money go to the operators rather than phone manufacturers, which makes the market more difficult and less lucrative for the manufacturers. If people did the math and realized ...

The deal with Yahoo! was worked out before the deal with Microsoft. It'd be interesting to see if they try and move Ovi services to the Microsoft platform as soon as the contract with Yahoo! ends.

Of course, I realize they all have their pros and cons, but I think the two most viable choices at this point are Windows and Android, and if I had to choose now, I'd choose the latter, because it is a more open platform and I have more faith in Google than in Microsoft. What's of particular importance to me is that I like to buy unlocked and unbranded phones from the manufacturers rather than from network operators. What ...

I just terminated my Ovi account. I don't like Yahoo. I've been a long-time Nokia fan, but they seem to do everything they can to push me away. I'll stick with my N900 for a while, but the longer it takes Nokia to produce a nice new Windows smartphone, the more likely I am to switch to Android and never look back...

Easier Ad-hoc?

in the Article: New Wi-Fi Spec to Permit Direct Device-to-Device Linking forum

I believe the ability for Wi-Fi devices to connect directly to each other has been there since the beginning: this is called ad-hoc mode. (Most of us use the infrastructure mode, when the devices talk only to the access point, which acts like a wireless switch.) It sounds like this spec is all about making the process of setting up an ad-hoc network between any two devices easier and more transparent to the user, which is why it's just ...

The assumption here is that the person you contact via PTT actually wants to be contacted in this manner at the given moment. I can see great potential for creating awkward and embarrassing situations with PTT.

Well, to stay on the topic, I was talking about this new system. I would go as far as question the point of PTT for consumers (unlike businesses) in general, but that's a separate discussion.

I don't think Cingular has any need for T-Mobile. They would be buying the hassle of running a redundant network and not so many customers with it, compared to how many of their own they already have. Vodafone has already stated that they're not interested, although some speculate that it might dump its 45% share of Verizon Wireless in favor of the 100% ownership of a GSM network. I really can't even begin to guess who ...

Then Mr. Branson will decide to buy the whole thing and call it Virgin MegaSex.

Firmware update after warranty period
