Re: Sanyo M1
Sanyo M1 doesn't have a memory card slot. So 1GB built-in kinda sucks.
I've got 2GB of memory on my Hero. Haven't tried a 4GB card yet (not sure if they make them in that non-SDHC or whatever it's called form)... hopefully you can get the Ocean up to 4.2GB max memory.
OH GOD WHY THE WAIT
Are they serious? Spring is 3 months LONG!
How the hell is this "Ultra Media"...
... with only a 176x220 screen (and 2.1")? I mean, seriously. Come on.
$110
yay!
"finally" able to...?
Eric,
Just wondering, when you mention things like:
"Also the Drift is finally able to read mp3s, movies and pictures you load on the device yourself by using mass storage mode."
What exactly do you mean by "finally" - what are you comparing the Drift to? On my Hero, I have tons of movies music and photos on both my MiniSD card and the internal memory.. also, the Hero has always had the option to auto-save photos you take...
Thanks for all the ...
Whoa, NYC?
So wait, does this mean, for the first time in history (at least the history in my head), NYC will be one of the very first cities to have a new cellular technology deployed?!
Oh happy happy day! Crap, now I might have to ditch Helio to go back to Sprint, which I ditched to go to Helio... then again, Helio is a Sprint MVNO... hmmm. :D
"version for the US", har har.
Please, their version of the N95 for the US is more than likely going to be on Cingular. With no high-speed, only EDGE, because the GSM providers are the damn losers in the speed race. I'd ditch my contract and move to Cingular, despite less-than-stellar NYC reception, just for the US version of this phone - but only if they keep the feature set in parity with the overseas one.
Not likely.

Re: Don't be hatin
This is INDEED the 20th century, as someone previously said - just look at the death of the English language. "chu"? "hatin"? Come on, this is the interweb, just type normally. Aren't you going out of your way to make your type sound like your speech? :D
Unified network!
Oh man, if this means there's only be ONE standard worldwide (no more GSM or CDMA - just... umm... GSMDMA or something) that would be fantastic! Instead of having to swap out entire chipsets for different markets, you just tune the frequencies via software. Cool beans.
Thoughts after having both...
Picked up a Hero today so that I could hand down my Kickflip. The Hero is definitely the power-user handset. It played any video I threw at it (1000kbps encoding, etc) which was pretty impressive, as the Kickflip can really only play files encoded with the Media Mover software (which is 64kbps and QCIF size, IIRC).
Additionally, photos are stored as JPEGS instead of the strange "database"-like format that the Kickflip uses.
Overall the Hero is pretty kickass - great speakers, ...
Copying photos back and forth
The one thing about the Kickflip that drives me nuts, is the whole photo "database" thing - how you cant just copy over photos. Thing is, it means you also cannot copy photos TO the phone. So I can't get any of the 100+ photos that I always carry around on my phone, onto the Kickflip.
Helio tells me that this will be addressed in the next (maybe non-beta) version of their Media Mover software. Erf...
Re: we have a kickflip
Tell me the packaging isn't freaking sweet! I mean, they use magnets! MAGNETS! Haha!
(Got my Kickflip a few days ago - jury's still out as I'm a "power" user... but you definitely get everything they say you do. The hardware itself is pretty damn solid, the sound is extremely clear, etc. =)

Alls Is know and alls Is keep sayin iz, you don't know what hell you are talking about. Funny how bad GSM sucks when 55.8 million cingular customers speak otherwise and an entire continent chose it to be their wireless standard.
Oh really? Did you talk to them all? Are you aware that studies have shown people will stick with lousy service because they're concerned that another carrier will be just as lousy? And we're talking ...
Hahahaha....
Alls I know, and alls I keep saying, is that GSM service sucks in most major cities. I'm not a fanboy of any mobile technology ('cept Helio lately) but CDMA owns GSM in a crowded metro area, especially in buildings.
Plus, don't they mean an AT&T MVNO? After eating AT&T Wireless and turning it into Cingular, word is that they're going BACK to AT&T. Can you say customer confusion?
Funny how the most expensive cellular service is also the most ...
Re: Goddam credit check...
Oh, I wasn't blaming them - I was just upset that they were closed, so I couldn't order until the morning! =D
Re: Myspace.
"and a lot of people use it as a personal website for themselves because you can edit the html"
Aaaactually... I think that's a bad thing. Have you SEEN some of these people's pages? My god, it's like when AOL launched Hometown or when Angelfire first came out - basically, 95% of the pages are overblown with graphics, crazy colored text, 5 songs, 3 movies... feels like some of the pages are going to put me into a seizure. ...
Re: Expensive
Umm, with Verizon they also have blocks in place for adding your own content. Helio gives you an app that will convert and download right to your phone/t-flash card.
You also had to qualify access to MySpace with "via mob web", so that doesn't count (not that I give a crap about MySp.)
Helio also has unlim. videos, unlim. online music "browsing" (who cares about browsing it?), unlimited TEXT, PERIOD, not just the "IN" network crap, unlim. bandwidth usage, works on ...
Goddam credit check...
$150 deposit! That means I can't order it _right this minute_ and have to wait for the morning! ARGH! I'm dying here.
Re: look what i found!
So close yet so far! Brian, how much was the phone itself? =)
Re: MAY?! ARGH!
"haha i meant theyve launched for KOREANS,not for kansas. "
Oh, that KA. I have NO idea what the state code is for Kansas, I was just assuming, as SPrint HQ is in Kansas IIRC. =) Also so used to abbreviating the Korean market as SK...
So only in Korean right now? No no, that won't do at all. Time to play the waiting game some more... but thanks for the info! :)

Re: MAY?! ARGH!
How the heck did you get their customer service number? Did you go through the public relations number?
Also, if they've launched (over the phone, at least) for Kansas, that doesn't necessarily mean that they'll sell you a phone/service for other markets... does it?
Cuz if so, I'ma ring their phones off the hook! =)
(OMG, what's happening to me?!)
MAY?! ARGH!
That's like, THREE DAYS away! I've NEVER been so hyped about a new product release from ANY company. Finally, a company with real gadget freaks behind the scenes, bring hardware and services that are GENUINELY new to the US market - not just tacked on crap.
I'm dropping cash on terminating my Sprint contract the second Helio launches, porting my number over (they e-mailed me that number porting will be available right at launch), and I'll be in mobile ...
Dear god...
"You're talking about making a bigger one."
Seriously, those things look like tanks. Nokia, please take a hint from Sanyo, whom you're now in bed with, on how to reduce handset thickness even with a 2.4" LCD and a decent camera. You know, because the Japanese manufacturers have been using 2.4" LCDs for something like two years now, and even with 2MP cams, are still super thin. Sheesh.
Re: dumb
Not to mention that this thing is in TWO parts - so if this gets implemented, there's a SECOND gadget that you have to bring with you along with the phone itself. This is completely retarded.
Re: ZOMFG can't wait for Helio...
Aw man, I hope you're right! I've got money set aside to cancel my Sprint contract and port my number right over. :)
Re: Helio Launch already
Would you people stop with the game system comparisons! =P
Anyway, ditto - this wait for Helio is the worst!
Re: Future Helio Handsets (Samsung?)
Gah, if Helio never gets a Sammy phone I'll be happy. That is, unless they replace their godawful UI with the Helio one, which I believe they are doing to all their handsets...
Sammy may be king in SK, but honestly the carriers themselves seem to be pushing the manfacturers for the features. If you compared say, Samsung in SK, with Fujitsu or Hitachi in Japan, based solely on hardware - the Japanese manufacturers would win. Bigger better screens, ...
Re: this quarter
Eric (and Rich), thanks for the great info! As a gadget junkie :) , I Helio's launch is right up there with say, an Apple product release - on pins and needles! I plan on ditching my Sprint phone and contract as soon as they have product available for purchase.
Re: ZOMFG can't wait for Helio...
Argh. Still so many days left in "spring"!
Rich - Q about Helio phones...
Hey Rich,
When you had your mitts on the two Helio phones, were the screens the same size? Specs for the SK version of the Kickflip (can't remember the exact model number now, it's a VK Mobile phone - 650 maybe) state the screen is 2.2", and I also read that the Hero specifically had a 2.2" screen.
Of course, for whatever reason in all the photos the Hero appears to have the bigger screen, but it may just be due ...
ZOMFG can't wait for Helio...
Look at the interface! It's so... clean... and efficient... look how many fields they fit on that QVGA screen - my Samsung with the same resolution only fits 3 or 4... wow... just wow. Bout time someone gave us something that could even slightly compete with Japanese and South Korean carriers.
The best!
You guys always have the best gadget-related hijinks. I was reading the RIM vs. NTP one, COMPLETELY seeing how they could have done that. Hahahaha!
Re: Nationwide network outage?
*sniff* smells like fanboy in here. a nationwide outage is something to discuss!
ooo...
Hopefully this means no more oooogly phones, of which Nokia has had more than a few... I like the simpler E-Series, and the new N-Series is pretty good too. =D
Re: japan...
Also a much smaller country with a much more efficient deployment infrastructure, so it's easier to get this kind of bleeding-edge kit rolled out quickly. Additionally nearly every customer uses some kind of mobile data, the most common being e-mail and text messaging, so having a high-tech phone is the norm. Check out KDDI's and NTT's sites and you'd be hard pressed to find what we could ever consider a budget/low-end phone - their "cheap" handsets are equal to ...
OH GOD, are they high?!
*NOT ANOTHER flash memory format!!!*
Here's what they should have done: take the MiniSD standard, and cram SIM functionality into it. Done and done. No need to wait for larger formats (4GB MiniSD is almost here), no need to struggle to increase the capacity of this new Flash/SIM standard, plenty of manufacturers already cranking them out, etc.
What happens when you've filled the 512MB, which is nothing lately? Are they going to start making phones with what amounts to two ...
Re: MYSPACE IS TAKING OVER THE WORLD!!!
Seriously. My friend, who is completely addicted to it (and has like 5XX "friends" she doesnt even know on it) made me make a page. I put some BS pictures on it and it has stagnated ever since.
Though, it is very useful for checking out bands, both signed and especially unsigned. Hopefully they'll roll the music player capability into the Mobile version of the app - as the phones are supposed to have Flash, this shouldn't be too ...
Screen size...
Both phone's LCDs are 2.2"... which is unfortunately the max normal screen size for Korean phone manufacturers. I think Sky may have one or two 2.3" LCDs but that's about it.
This is one area where the Japanese manufacturers have definitely been pushing the envelope - screen sizes on average are 2.4" with many 2.6" ones on the way, all while keeping form factors very manageable.
As Helio is supposed to push it when it comes to content, I'm hoping ...
Re: Hey Rich
Also remember that the launch isn't until the spring - Helio may be electing to not divulge every feature until later on, so that other carriers don't get the jump on them.
The Hero (8300) for the SK market had WiFi - again, not in Helio's spec list but I'm hoping they keep it!
Re: Excuse me...but...
Well, spec-wise I'd say they're pretty good. Also the 8300 (and IIRC the VK one) both had WiFi in their SK versions, and rumor is that Helio will be keeping the WiFi (Rich said that the rumor was specifically that all Helio phones will have WiFi).
Given that Helio hasn't said much other than announcing these two phones, what will make Helio very neat is the content they'll provide, and the statement that the phones will be pretty open to ...
