Getting Voicemail

When I dial out to get voicemail, the screen backlight goes dark in a second. When prompted to enter my password, I cannot see the numerical keypad on the screen. I've tried different settings, but cannot get the backlight to stay on. Using the pullout keypad doesn't help, because the longest setting for the lights behind the keys is 8 seconds. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
