It's posturing - a way for Verizon to say they didn't want it anyway - like when someone breaks up with you.
As has been said, the reason is GSM. It's more prevalent in other countries with large markets, more sales, and bigger profits.

if you don't want to buy a data plan. With wi-fi you can access the internet and email and there are heaps of hot-spots everywhere. The phone is perfect for the casual user who just wants to check email and a few things at the coffee shop. Why would anyone want to buy this phone for business use anyway...lots of better phones.
